Francesco Perini
San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy
Inspired by his family’s legacy of skilled marquetry practitioners and his admiration for Florentine craftsmanship, Francesco Perini (b. 1966) seeks to engage with and advance the grand tradition of Italian marquetry whilst forging a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. His journey began in the 1980s when his carpentry workshop garnered acclaim for its refined and sophisticated craftsmanship. Over the years, this heritage evolved into a distinctive personal vision for collectable design works.
Perini has devoted himself to creating unique pieces that synthesise precious materials with fine woods, drawing inspiration from the vibrant natural world that surrounds him. Secluded in his atelier, nestled in the Chianti and Valdarno valleys – a landscape of unspoiled beauty and quiet contemplation where shady forests of prized chestnut and beech trees meet natural rock formations – Perini works en plein air, crafting his pieces with the same dedication as the great masters of the 20th century.
Perini’s works have been placed in prestigious residences and numerous international exhibitions, including the PAD in London, FOG Design + Art in San Francisco, and Design Miami. In 2022, Perini received the Contemporary Design Award from the PAD London judging panel for his work Casamona. His work has been featured in AD US, Italy and France, Financial Times, FT How To Spend It, and The Design Edit. He is represented internationally by Gallery FUMI.
