Sam Orlando Miller
Artist Sam Orlando Miller is known for his skill with form and reflection. He uses drawing, painting and making as a way of thinking, creating two and three-dimensional works from what he sees in his imagination.
His early years were spent at the benches in the family silversmithing workshop, London, learning skills of the trade passed down from generations of craftsmen. Miller is widely recognised for his work with metal and mirror. He works by hand and eye, using hand-tools and gesture, with a painter’s understanding of colour. He is at ease with the creative use of silvered surface.
‘The skill of working with silver is the understanding reflection. When you make an object in silver you need to know how it captures the world around it.’
He made his first sculptural mirror in 2009 to illuminate the dark interior of his Italian farmhouse. More mirror-objects followed, in the form of tables and chandeliers, their geometry formal, their content poetic. In 2012 his first solo exhibition, The Sky-Blue Series, was presented by Hedge Gallery, San Francisco.
Equally skilled with wood and light he creates his work alone, a solitary studio practice, the titles of his work reflecting the poetry of his process.
