Study O Portable

Study O Portable is a London-based design practice founded in 2009 by Bernadette Deddens (NL) and Tetsuo Mukai (JP), who met while studying at University of the Arts ArtEZ in Arnhem.

Interested in design’s relationship to the cultural landscape, Study O Portable’s practice maintains a speculative approach to the definition of design, and is intrigued by different modes of thinking relating to things and objects that surround us. Their work is an exploration of human society and its active connection to the designed environment.

“Our projects start from our interest in how we can make use of something,” say the designers “not because of its intended purpose, but because of our ability to see different possibilities in ordinary objects. Like, how a set of building blocks could represent anything as long as you can believe it’s a wooden hut, metal robot or glass skyscraper.”

Study O Portable’s works have been exhibited internationally at The Design Museum (London), Museum of Contemporary Art (Santa Barbara), Design Parade (Hyeres), Design Miami/Basel (Miami Beach, Basel), Otrascosas de Villarrosas (Barcelona), Pavilion of Art and Design (Paris, London) among others.
