STARRY NIGHT / NORDIC LIGHT

Opening October 29th

Galerie 56, in collaboration with Stockholm’s Jackson Design, presents Starry Night / Nordic Light, a sculptural survey of lighting design from Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, spanning the mid-20th century and tracing the extraordinary ways Nordic architects and designers transformed illumination from a practical necessity into a vehicle for artistic expression.  It opens October 29th.

Co-curated by renowned architect Lee F. Mindel, FAIA, and Jackson Design, Starry Night / Nordic Light brings together designs by legends Paavo Tynell, Alvar Aalto, Poul Henningsen, Verner Panton, Harald Notini, Edward Hald, and others.  In total over 100 individual works will be shown and span table, floor, wall, and ceiling fixtures.

The endless dark winters of the Nordic countries have long been a source of inspiration for lighting design in the region.  The exhibition captures a defining chapter in modern design, when the arrival and widespread adoption of electricity opened entirely new possibilities for controlling, filtering, reflecting, and shaping light – and set the standard for all that followed.
