Southern Guild and Galerie56 are thrilled to announce the unveiling of “no bats, no chocolate,” a solo exhibition featuring handcrafted seating environments by South African artist Porky Hefer. The exhibition will run from April 30th to August 26th, 2024. Hefer’s latest collection is a vibrant showcase of animal-inspired sculptures designed to ignite a sense of play and wonder. With nine larger-than-life forms, each sculpture invites viewers to connect emotionally and physically with the natural world, fostering a sense of communion with rather than dominion over the animal kingdom.

At Galerie56 in Tribeca, “no bats, no chocolate” celebrates the remarkable talents and adaptations of various animals. From the migratory strategies of wildebeests to the role bats play in the pollination of chocolate, Hefer’s work highlights the intricacies of wildlife. Through whimsical sculptures of creatures like walruses, ladybird beetles, and crocodiles, Hefer urges visitors to reconsider their perceptions of these animals and recognize their vital roles within ecosystems.

Hefer’s designs reflect his eco-activist mindset, emphasizing the importance of tolerance and reverence for wild species. By encouraging interactive experiences with his sculptures, he promotes a more creative and humane relationship with the environment. With a nod to the Radical Design Group’s emphasis on play and social interaction, Hefer’s work not only sparks curiosity but also fosters a deeper connection to the natural world, inviting viewers to rediscover the joy of exploration and collaboration.
